Established in 1988

The American West Symphony of Sandy City is a volunteer 501(c)(3) organization in its 30th season of providing quality music around the Salt Lake Valley. The symphony performs fourteen concerts at various venues each season, including eight educational concerts, a youth symphony collaboration, piano concerto winners concert, and a pops concert at the Sandy Amphitheater.

All orchestra and choir members are volunteers, and come from all walks of life, ranging from dentists and rocket scientists to college and high school students. Many are also musicians in other orchestras around the Salt Lake valley, such as the Salt Lake Symphony. Additionally, many of our volunteers play in musicals performed at the Sandy Amphitheater throughout the summer.

Orchestra Highlights

Past seasons have included the Utah premier of Verdi's Nabucco, and the William Tell Overture by Rossini. Throughout the year, concerts are consistently well reviewed in both the Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News. In 2005, the orchestra's performance of Carmen was hailed by the Salt Lake Tribune as one of the Top 10 Concerts of the Year, and in 2010 the Deseret News noted how Maestro Rosenberg “elicited vibrant playing from his orchestra” (Edward Reichel for Deseret News, “Concert review: American West Symphony sizzles at opening”, October 22, 2010).

Chorus Highlights

The American West Chorus & Chamber Singers provide an opportunity to perform classical and contemporary choral repertoire, independently and with the orchestra. The choir’s initiative is to build a community chorus of up to 60 members dedicated to musical excellence. The choir performs major works across the entire spectrum of the choral repertoire, and gives singers the opportunity to excel as musicians. The choir performs two standalone concerts during the year in order to cultivate public interest in quality choral music.
